6 Ways to Come Up with New Years Resolutions

The New Year is coming! The New Year is coming! Are you ready? I can't believe that 2017 is almost over! I feel that as I get older, the years seem to go faster and faster. Especially when you graduate college and get out in to the real world. But with the New Year coming, I'm starting to think about New Years Resolutions, which always seem nearly impossible to come up with. So here are a few ways I've put together to help me come up with New Years Resolutions. Enjoy!

1) Look to the future

This one, I feel, is the most common. It's all about figuring out what you want to accomplish in the New Year and making goals that way. Who do you want to be at the end of the year and what kind of goals can you create to make that happen. There is nothing wrong with this way, but I know when I've done this in the past, I've never really been able to keep them throughout the year (ie: workout more...let's be honest, that one never really sticks).

2) Look to the past

This is one where you really need to reflect on your past year, who you are, and what you planned in your past New Years Resolutions. Asking yourself questions like what did I accomplish? What didn't I accomplish? Why didn't I accomplish it? And how can I put myself in a better position to accomplish it, are all ways you can come up with these types of goals.

3) Come up with categories to fill

One of the ways you can come up with New Years Resolutions is by coming up with categories to fill. Here are a few of the categories I put together for myself: personal, self improvement, health/fitness, travel, and passion. I want to make sure I have at least one goal for each of these categories.

4) Find one big goal

This one is a great one and is a lot easier to keep, in my opinion. For example, my brother gave up chocolate for a whole year as his New Year resolution. That's something simple but at the same time, a pretty big goal. And he was able to keep it because he wasn't overwhelmed with a bunch of goals. So you could do something like this for the year.

5) Collaborate and share goals

This is a great one for those of you who like accountability (I'm raising my hand in agreement right now). When you create goals with your friends, it's easy to hold each other accountable and, depending on what the goal is, you guys can struggle together. For example, I make a goal every year (like most people) to work-out more and I've never really followed through with this goal. But, if I go in on the goal with a friend, we can encourage each other to work-out and we can even go together. Automatic work-out buddy!

6) Create monthly goals

This one focuses more on exercising self-discipline, knowing that it is easier for you to keep one goal for one whole month versus many goals for a whole year. It breaks your goals up in to manageable amounts and manageable times. You can create a list at the beginning of the year and then dole it out to specific months or you can reflect at the end of each month on what you want to accomplish the following month.

I really hope this helps you come up with the goals you want to accomplish in the New Year. Have an amazing weekend and I will talk to y'all on Monday!

Love, Taylor
